Parliament does determine the priorities of foreign policy in Ukraine
Statement by the Party of Regions Press Service

25.11.2008, 12:28

Return to the Section

Having got acquainted with the comment by the MFA of Ukraine concerning the Party of Regions Leader V.F.Yanukovych’s speech at the 10th congress of “United Russia” party in Moscow, we would like to reiterate to the representatives of the foreign-policy department once again that parliament does determine the priorities of foreign policy in Ukraine. And just because our Constitution has transformed into a pure formality long ago, the officials let themselves point the leader of the largest faction in Verkhovna Rada and the most influential party in Ukraine to what and where he is to say.

It is not the first example when the MFA assumes irrelevant functions forgetting that its task is only to ensure implementation of the state’s foreign-policy priorities determined by the legislator. And far be it from deciding at Mykhaylivska Square on the Party of Regions’ position regarding the Common Economic Space.

The achievements of our diplomacy on the way toward a free trade area with the EU are well-known. They are somewhere near the non-visa regime between Ukraine and the European Union, joining the Membership Action Plan and a lot of other so-called projects. Therefore, for the future we would ask to refrain from similar comments which definitely do not favor strengthening of our state’s international authority.
